This series explores the deep connection between textiles and memory. Each piece reflects the layers of history and personal stories woven into fabric, highlighting themes of identity, heritage, and time. Through diverse materials and techniques, Purcell invites viewers to reflect on how textiles carry and preserve memories, offering a powerful visual dialogue between the ephemeral and the enduring.

THEME: The significance of ceremonial clothing in different cultures – garments designed and adorned, not merely for protecting the body, but to endow the wearer with greater power, magical influence, religious grandeur or superiority of position.

INSPIRATION: Many cultures incorporate magical talismans and text as well as geometric shapes & numbers within the fabric of a robe to protect and empower the wearer. These interweave the practical, down to earth elements of weaving cloth with the other worldly, elemental aspects of our universe

“May the warp be the White Orb of Heaven,
May the weft be the Queen of the Night,
May the Moonsilver-spun yarn be woven
With the river and leaf of Starlight. Anon
The distaff of creation in the sun,
A thread of substance teases out, and then
Upon the wheel of Nature’s laws is spun
The universal stuff of worlds and men.
Woven upon the loom of cosmic law
Is warp and woof of all that has a place;
The whirling fragments so our touch coerce
That moving points feel like a solid face.
This wondrous fabric of the universe,
Solid substance the Creator’s rich store,
As finely vibrant matter, makes traverse
In orbit tracing surface evermore.
Point, line and circle make creation’s form,
Be it a virus or a thunderstorm.”
